Theme: This year we
are reenacting a medieval village celebrating the end of the harvest or Celtic New Year. The townspeople have gathered together to rejoice the
coming new year and the thinning of veils between two worlds. (As
well as the end of the harvest. And what shall they do with all those extra
pumpkins? Check out the Pumpkin Games!)
Peasants will don masks and mythical creatures may be spied amongst the
oak studded grounds. Was that an Ogre? A fairy perhaps? (And you thought Halloween was over!) Come play with us amongst
the lush grounds of Howard park.
History: November 1 was the Celtic feast
of Samhain. Samhain, Gaelic for "summer's end," It was the most important
of the ancient Celtic feasts. (Samhain is known to us as Halloween.)
Before
the cold winter months set in the Celts had one last
celebration after the harvest. The Celts celebrated the Day of the Dead on All
Hallows Day (1st November). The spirits were believed to rise from the dead and, in
order to attract them, food was left on the doors. To scare off the evil
spirits, the Celts wore masks. (Plus, it was a great excuse to party)
We are taking canned and/or
nonperishable donations for the Interfaith Food Bank. Please bring the items to
the front gate and receive a dollar off admission.
The Interfaith Food Bank is a community
supported charitable non profit that has been providing emergency food
assistance to residents of Amador County since 1998. As we reach the end of
summer, our resources have dwindled and we look to the community to help us
restock our shelves. We serve hundreds of families each week. We see
new people every day. 68% of our clients work. 20% are senior citizens that
can't exist on social security or a modest retirement.
Without the help of our community we cannot
serve the almost 3000 people that come to us every month. Be a part of the
solution. Help us stock the shelves at Interfaith. Any non perishable item
(no glass please) is welcome. Cereal, canned fruits & veggies, soup, tomato
sauce, tuna, meal in a can (like chili, stew, pork n. beans). Thanks for
your help.
